Training Remote (On-Line)

Safety of Machinery Essential Skills - remote, off-site training

In common with on-site training, the objective of remote, off-site training, is to give designers of machinery the knowledge and tools to design safe machinery in accordance with UK Regulations and European Union Directives for machinery.

The situation brought about during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing has been to encourage remote training. To this end our Safety of Machinery Training Essential Skills have been optimised for delivery using the Microsoft Teams interface. In contrast to the on-site, face-to-face approach, because remote learning is done through a virtual interface, it is vulnerable to limiting engagement between the trainer and the trainees. The remote, on-line, Safety of Machinery Essential Skills training has been structured to maintain and encourage interaction and engagement.

With Covid-19 limitations of movement and direct contact we have all had to fit into this to this new environment. For many years, our training programmes have been face-to-face, centred on the clients place of work. We now have had to learn and adapt. We have re-formatted all our skills training programmes to be delivered “remotely”, on-line, whilst retaining the core face-to-face experience, knowledge transfer and, most importantly, the personal touch. The work we put into this, necessary, re-formatting has more than paid off! We now deliver training in “bite-sized” 2 to 2½ hour segments significantly improving the knowledge transfer in “digestible” portions and reducing loss of working time in much the same way as “toolbox” talks have proven successful to maintenance teams. Moreover, you do not have to pay for travel time and expenses which can be significant both at home and, particularly, worldwide.

Experience has shown that Microsoft Teams has the benefits which make it a great platform for our Safety of Machinery Training, enabling us to not only present the training base but also to communicate, discuss and share the attendees real challenges and, hopefully, resolve them in a way that podcasts cannot.

The benefits of remote training can be summarised in 5 ways:

  1. Cost-efficiency - Costs are focused on delivery. Not subject to travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs thus much smaller cost to the company.
  2. Time efficiency – Attendees time is focused on delivery. Not subject to travel away from the work environment.
  3. Accessibility – Attendees can be located worldwide limited only by network availability and time zones.
  4. Convenience - training sessions can be conducted between multiple locations located almost anywhere worldwide.
  5. Collaboration - Unlike most "podcasts" training sessions allow for interaction between the trainees and Trainer enhancing the knowledge transfer.
