Health & Safety Compliance Engineering specialises in the design, verification and validation of safety related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) and has been actively involved in the development of standards for functional safety. The primary standard for functional safety, EN 61508, requires formal management control over the design of SRP/CS’s including quantified verification and validation. The publication of the European Harmonised Standard EN61508 and its “daughter” standard EN 62061 “Safety of Machinery – Functional safety of safety related E/E/PE control systems” has formally “opened the door” to the employment of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic devices in SRP/CS. Until its revision in 2006 EN 60204-1 stated that “[safety related systems] … operation shall not be dependant on electronic logic or the transmission of commands over a communications network or link”. The new standards for Functional Safety have removed these limitations to technological advancement but requires a high level of formal management control over the design of SRP/CS’s including quantified verification and validation.
